Curriculum
Our Center’s curriculum is designed to support standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). HLC provides developmentally appropriate opportunities for growth through an integrated approach involving interest centers and thematic units of study. There will be many opportunities for hands-on, active exploration and interaction with adults, other children, and materials. The staff provide activities that are age-appropriate and meet each child’s individual developmental needs.
HLC’s curriculum addresses children’s developmental needs:
- To foster a positive self-concept
– Develop social skills
– Encourage children to think, reason, question, and experiment
– Encourage language and literacy development
– Enhance physical development
– Encourage and demonstrate sound health, safety, and nutritional practices
– Encourage creative expression and appreciation for the arts
– Respect cultural diversity
The WVU Child Learning Center uses the Creative Curriculum.
This curriculum is a comprehensive, scientifically based early childhood curriculum. Fifty-three of the 55 counties in West Virginia use the Creative Curriculum.
The Creative Curriculum encourages development of the whole child: physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. Through the physical environment children are expected to explore the different areas of dramatic play, water and sand, blocks, music and movement, and art areas. Learning is promoted through natural play.
