Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what is happening during my child’s day?

You are always welcome to visit or call during the day, and when you pick up your child, you will receive a Daily Activity Report. Your child’s teacher will note how long he or she napped, what portion of his or her lunch was eaten, and how well he or she is doing with potty-training. The teacher will also describe all of the fun activities that your son or daughter and their friends participated in, and there will always be a little note from teacher to parent regarding a special moment of the day.

May I visit my child during the day?

Absolutely! Feel free to join us at lunchtime, playtime, anytime!

How flexible is the WVU Child Learning Center?

The Child Learning Center is open from Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. for your convenience. The CLC is closed for all University observed holidays.

Children may come to the Child Learning Center for either half-day or full-day care, as few as two, or as many as five days a week. In addition to pre-school age care, the CLC offers before and after school programs and a summer program for school age children.

How do I know that my child is safe while I am at work?

The Child Learning Center is committed to the safety and security of the children and teachers. The Center’s teachers, aides, and the director provide the most effective security – that of a personal nature.

In order to access the children’s classroom, parents must use the front door keypad with special code and register at the sign-in desk. Visitors are required to present identification and receive a visitor’s badge from the staff. The director must personally approve all visitors before they are allowed into the building.

WVU Campus security will be responsible for monitoring the safety and security of this building.

How are the WVU Child Learning Center classrooms arranged?

The center has two classroom wings. The younger children’s classrooms are located in the wing to the right of the building as you enter. The older children’s classrooms are located on the opposite wing.

The teachers at the Child Learning Center understand that children learn through play, creative expression, exploring their environment, and experiments. The classroom environments are arranged in different learning centers, where child can use manipulatives and their senses. The Child Learning Center also uses national assessments (ITERS and ECERS) to maintain a quality environment for your children.

Do children go outside every day?

The WVU Child Learning Center believes that the outdoor environment is considered an extension of the classroom. In addition to running, jumping, and climbing, teachers plan nature walks, picnics, and other learning opportunities. Weather permitting, children will play outside every day, so be sure that your children have hats, coats, mittens, and a change of warm clothes at the Center during warm weather!

When weather is not conducive to outside play, the children will be given an opportunity to play in our large indoor play space.

What qualifications will do the staff at the WVU Child Learning Center have?

The Center’s staff are required to meet the standards established by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources and also meet the position qualifications of Hildebrandt Learning Centers. All staff have obtained required clearances and criminal reports prior to being introduced into the classroom. Staff are also trained in Pediatric First Aid and CPR.

Will my child be prepared for school?

Yes. The Child Learning Center uses the Creative Curriculum, which is endorsed by the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) and approved by the State of West Virginia.

Special features of the Center include

Two playgrounds designed to create natural playscapes for outdoor play
Nursing room for use by center mothers and their children
All food cooked on site and served family style in the classroom
Large indoor play area for inclement weather

My child will attend the CLC, can I still enroll in a dependent care spending account plan to help manage my child care costs?

Yes you can. Employees may make an election change (start a Flexible Spending Account or increase or decrease their annual amount) when they change dependent care providers. You must submit a completed Change In Status form (available from the WVU Benefits Office) along with a statement from the daycare provider showing the dependent’s full name and the date that services will begin or have begun.
